In order to provide protection to engineers whilst clearing obstacles, the American Caterpillar D8 bulldozer was converted by the British for the Normandy campaign. It had an armoured superstructure to protect the driver and engine compartment. Strictly speaking, it was an ‘angledozer’ and the angle of the dozer blade in order to shift material to either side. On D-Day they were employed by Beach Groups, removing fortifications, rescuing stranded vehicles and clearing beach exits. They continued in these roles as the Allied armies advanced inland.
