In the darkest days of 1940 Churchill ordered the construction of landing craft so that an army could be carried across the channel to take back the continent from the Germans. This surprisingly forward-looking vision resulted in numerous different types, the most iconic of which is probably the Landing Craft, Tank. This fourth type was the most numerous and had the greatest carrying capability. A cottage industry of light engineering works from locomotive builders to bicycle works were engaged in fabricating the craft to take pressure off the shipbuilders who were engaged in the more vital work of Destroyer building. They took part in the landings at Salerno, Anzio, Normandy, the South of France and Walcheren.
