The Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle was developed to rescue vehicles stranded on beaches whilst under fire. They were also able to re-float landing craft using the wooden buffers on their front. The BARV was based on the diesel powered M4A2 Sherman (Mk III in British use) and around 60 were used by REME units for the Normandy invasion. So successful was the design that they were used into the 1970s.
